Part one of a two-part “Tips on Graphic Design” series
Great graphic design is one of the hallmarks of a successful brand. Sending on your branding should be thought of as an investment, not an expense. Your company’s logo, your product or service flyers, the website you send prospects to, your consumer packaging – all of these things serve multiple purposes. A really important function is reinforcing that your company is unique and your products are a great value. Design carries the essence of who you are. It’s so important that your customers and consumers understand this message!
Unfortunately, we see too many companies that have decided to shortcut this critical step in defining their company’s brand. But short-cutting here, when you’ve already invested so heavily in your business is like buying the Lexis and then deciding to take the wind-up, rubber-band version and not the V-8!
Three things to look for when selecting your graphic design partner
Talent. OK, we’re starting with a REALLY obvious one! But it’s true. It takes a lot more than just knowing Photoshop and Illustrator to do great design – your designer actually has to have style, taste, strategic marketing savvy and an ability to use all this to help you sell more stuff!
Customer Orientation. This probably doesn’t simply translate as ‘yes’ to every whim the client has. Expect your graphic design partner to challenge and push you because he/ she has as much passion for your success as you do and has the experience and talent to know more. You’re the expert on your business and your customers. But your graphic artist is the expert on how to turn cold, indifferent prospects into rabidly fanatical advocates for your brand!
An Awesome Team Member and Team Leader. In the designer role, expect your designer to be your representative with the many potential suppliers your brand will have to interface with on its way from product concept to shelf to home or business. Photographers, printers, packaging vendors, and others are just a few members of the supply chain your graphic designer should have a leadership role in working with.
